In Eco-Wise, children ages 10-14 undertake a whole-systems approach to outdoor environmental learning. This deep ecological, 360 degree learning lens places Nature center-stage through hands-on experiences about native animals, plants, waterways, insects, and more. Children explore topics through a cross-disciplinary approach that takes humans out of the center of things. A block about stream study might include hiking and mapping the stream, testing water quality, sharing water stories about indigenous peoples, examining dragonfly larvae, playing a “thinking like a beaver” game, measuring water depth, trying creek snorkeling, engaging in water play, learning about the Clean Water Act, considering ethical and economic issues related to native water rights, and water-color painting.
